Just one gun you say....that would be tuff choice.  I have a .50 cal. I do truly love now but with the cost of powder and lead as it is getting to I would be tempted to go at least down to .45 cal.  Add to this the new hunting laws of Calif. I think a .36 cal. to be a better choice for me.  At this time in my area, hunting with a muzzleloader is all but outlawed for anything except rabits and squirrels (that is with lead projectiles, I asked a fish and game officer about this , his answer was it would be legal to hunt other game like deer and such if I used steel balls.)  Anyway, My first choice would be a southern mountain rifle iron mounted, full stock, flint in .36 or .45.  I would lean to the .36 most likely.  However I have often thought about a .40.  Never owned one or even shot a .40.  I think it would be a real good compromise between the two.

Who here has more guns than they actually need ?   ... besides me.
If ya had to go with just one BLACKPOWDER/FRONT STUFFER...
what one  would it be ... it kan be one ya have or one ya want ?????
Mine would be one of my 36 flintlocks ... they would do the beat all around for me... if I had to go law abidun'   50 cal poor boy flinter .
  Lets hear some viewpoints ...

Only One

To me the obvious choice is a smoothbore preferably in 12 ga
shot or small pebbles for small game, ball or buck for larger animals
