Okay we've seen a great pair of knockers + here, finely carved from various woods.  Though guns are referred to here the topic is the woods we prefer for stocks.  I love walnut but (to me) a longrifle should be carved from maple.  What say ye sleepers and lollygaggers?

curly maple , curly ash , or curly cherry are the best looking stocks , unless you can afford the very best walnut ! and when you talk the best walnut ,your talking a stock blank that goes for about the same price as a finished rifle stocked in the other three woods !

Walnut is the top stock wood and frighteningly expensive.  Cherry is beautiful and makes great stocks.  Ash looks great but is seems to be a little more difficult to work with.  Every single shooter I own - including "modern" as well as front loading - is either maple or walnut.  My .54 is walnut but the European variety.  And even the very first rifle I ever bought new and with my own $$ (a single shot Remington .22) is walnut and set me back around $19 or $20; I still have it and sometimes shoot it.

my shooters are a mix ! god may have to guess what wood was used on my southern mountain rifle it`a about as plain as you can get , not sure what the ardessa hawken was stocked with , maybe beech , the spanish smoothbore is walnut , and is plain as dirt , the two somewhat more modern rifles , trapdoor and revolving carbine in .22 are both black walnut , !

My .36 SMR is super plain maple and iron.  The .32 SMR was supposed to be plain but turned out to have a lot of curl.
