Over the years I have read many recipes for bullet lubes, I have yet to come across one that uses pork lard in the mix. I ask because this stuff is easy to get where I live and it had to have been used in the old days. Has anyone ever used it? I'm also thinking of trying in my cap-n-ball revolvers as bullet lube.

I have used unsalted lard mixed with beeswax for many years especially for lubing maxiballs and REALs. By adding or reducing the beeswax content, you can get a lube perfect for any temperature.

I'm aware of many shooters who use lard in their lube concoctions.

I've used plenty of Crisco concoctions but never lard.  I do know some others like lard for lube.
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.

Thanks guys, was one of those things I was just wondering about, it's so much easier to find then most of the other lubes/fats mentioned?

A friend of mine uses a Crisco Concoction that he melts down so he can put it in a tooth paste tube. We were shooting at a match one day and he was tearing us up and this city slicker came up and asked what brand of tooth paste you using as patch  lube? Steve never cracked a smile and answered  oh this is Cologate  but I usually use Pepsodent.  it shoots better.  I have often wondered if the guy tried Pepsodent.

How does he get it in the used tube?
Seems like a waste of time.  [hmm]

a small amount of compressed air will inflate a used toothpaste tube if it has been unrolled.  I can see the benefit of the method but  would have to agree I don't think it is worth the effort - but I like the thought of repeating the shooting line scenario...  bunkr

He uses an air gun and blows it up then washes it out.  He melts the Crisco and his concoction down to liquid form and pours it in the tube using a small funnel.  When it cools down it it has the density of tooth paste.  It is really pretty neat and convenient.   He does it so it won't be so messy lubing the patches.  To each his own.  He has been doing it every since we started shooting back in the 70's .

This is something worth trying, I can see how it would make it easy to carry and use, and the looks while using on the range might just be worth it too.

Lard mix works good in medium  temp situations... Sheep tallow better in hot  weather and bear grease better in cold weather.  Just my experience.
