I just had to make the hardest decision of my life. I had to put to sleep my best friend and constant companion , my lab .  Her health had been going down hill for the last two weeks.  Thursday her old hip finally gave out on her , with my help she could get up and go to the bathroom and that was about the extent of her mobility.  Then yesterday she started throwing up and had diarrhea .  She didn't sleep well last night and this morning she couldn't even get up.   We took her to the vet and we really didn't have a lot choices .   He said her body was shutting  down and we could prolong her life for a few days may be a week but the quality of life would not be good.  So after 13 years she went to sleep with her head laying in my lap knowing she was loved like when she was puppy.  I know it is crazy to make so over a dog but I owe her a lot. She came into my life 2 months after my son was killed and was a constant companion. I owe her a lot and probably wouldn't be here today if she hadn't been there for me. I would rather have her company than half the people I come in contact with.  They say you will only have one extra special dog in your life and she was definitely  mine.  Thanks Raven,  for all the adventures and memories you have shared with me.

Crazy to make such a fuss over a dog? I don't know where you got that idea from. It has been almost 7 years since I had to put my best friend in the world down, stolen from me at 8 years old from Cushings Disease. His ashes are still on the mantle and I think about him most every day. I miss him more than any human I have lost in my life and still get tears in my eyes when I think about him. I have had and still have dogs but I don't think it is possible that there could be another like him. Like those who criticize the military without having served, I have no patience for anyone who dismisses our pain by saying "it's only a dog" and there are a few folks around here who cross the street when they see me after showing them the error of their thinking when they said that to me.
I am the one your mom warned you about!

You got it, redhawk.

What hotfxr said.  Just a few years ago I had to put my precious "Micky" the basset to sleep.  She had me for 14 years and was my little girl.  I don't think I could have grieved more over a human child; I was in blubbering agony at the vet's office.  She also died in my lap.  Her problem was cancer and we were told the same thing you were told about Raven.  I can't understand anyone not loving and adoring dogs.  While I truly grieve for  the other dogs I've lost, Micky was and is special.  We are kindred spirits, redhawk.
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.

Almost every dog I had was special since my first one when I was 7. I know how you feel and have no solutions for your pain except time. Time does heal all eventually.

My present dog is now 11 and slowing up. I dread the day when I'll be in your situation.

I have had probably 300 dogs in the last 40 years. Some I did not have a close relationship with because that was the way they wanted it. Others were as close as family. But after working with me and logging hundreds of miles together, they are ALL missed.
Even those that chose to be stand offish had all my respect and I was truly sorry to see them go. A dog is not given a long lifespan, perhaps because no creature can give that much of themselves for any longer. You have my prayers, I have been there many times.

RIP for your friend and companion; my condolences for you.
