Hanshi

This is an old thread and I just found it??  (susp)

The name I go by every day is actually a nickname.  There have been others that can't be posted on a family forum.  Some I had stuck for a while and were forgotten.  But the one I earned - and only used by students, other martial artists speaking formally and, of course, here on the forum.  The one I'm talking about is obviously "Hanshi".  It's a Japanese title given to only a few.  There has to be a a certain rank achieved; but it has other requirements beyond that.  It is the highest title in the martial arts referring ones position in the teaching hierarchy.  Others I've rated - but are only used (again) in the martial arts community - are Grandmaster, professor and the most commonly used; sensei.

But outside the dojo I'm just plain, old Tommy, short for Thomas.  Actually my students, former students and some other sensei even when outside the confines of the dojo say "Sir".  I have a habit of telling them all I'm just "Tommy"; however, this familiarity is often frowned upon by my peers and superiors.  So, forget all my 4 letter nicknames...please.   ROFL fght pnic 'shok'

Cranbrook

I find it interesting that the few friends I have left from my childhood who used to all go by their first names with the added "y" on the end, get upset with me if I call them that these days!

I last saw Timmy about a year ago and when I greeted him that way.......he frowned and blatantly replied,
My name is Tim!

I still get away with the added y when talking to my many brothers, There is Johnny, Tommy, Chucky, Marky, Brucey, and Scotty!   They still call me........Joey and I am fine with that and actually find that anyone that I know who calls me Joey must have known me for a very long time.

Cranbrook

I forgot to add that my Cranbrook handle comes from an old 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook I once owned and played with restoration back in the early 1980's.   It was a fun and solid old car and I think of myself as fun, old, and solid............so [hmm] hi:

Hanshi

I like your post, Cranbrook.  Along those lines I'm still called "Tommy"; sometimes "Tom" but mostly Tommy.  My cohort of friends and I actually have always called each other by our last names and still do.  These are childhood friends; newer friends do the "Tommy" thing.  Thing about it is that I never really grew up.  (susp)

When my younger brother became an officer in the US Army, he stopped being Tom and insisted on Thomas. Being a captain went to his head. The guys at Ft. Hood had many other "nicknames" for him most of them ending with the word 'hole' or 'head'.   [hmm]

My actual name is Thomas, hence, Tommy.

I have always been Jim, or James... it was never Jimmy.  I don't know why but the only one who ever got to call me Jimmy was my Grandmother... I Think my dad might have had something to do with it, he hated Jimmy... Maybe Grandma had called him Jimmy his whole life until I cam along... Who knows....

Cruel tricks our parents play on us. South of the Mason-Dixon line I am Charles Lee. When I am in trouble they throw my last name in. On the West coast I am "Chuck", or was until I helped build a dozen or so Pizza Time Theater's in the 80's. That was a long battle but the last person to call me Chuckee Cheese was buried several years ago. In my Black Powder group I am "Powder Maker" and in my Motorcycle group I am "Charmer", I don't know why. But having the "Chuck" moniker has scarred me for life. Think about it, it's the only name in the English language you cannot use in the Name Game. I think that actually helps explain why I am the way I am. That and since Brad and Angelina broke up, there really isn't much reason to go on anymore, is there?   ROFL  ROFL
I am the one your mom warned you about!

I was born Edward. And when I got into trouble it was Edward "Middle Name"!   (susp)  When I was in BIG trouble it was Edward "Middle Name" Taasevigen!  pnic  I stopped being Eddie in 4th grade but there are handful of people (mostly women), that have known me since kindergarten, that I ALLOW to still call me that. These days only the Judge calls me Edward. I was dubbed Big Ed when I worked at Scout camp about 25 years ago and it has stuck. The only thing that has changed, it used to be Big Ed and Harley, my little buddy at the time, and now it's Big Ed and Otto.
And I don't use "Middle Name".

Winter Hawk

Quite some time ago, around my freshman or suffermore year of high school, I decided I wanted a crew cut.  My Mom (the family barber) fixed me up.  Now I have a fairly prominent proboscis, and this was in Hawaii where noses tended to be flat and wide.  We were shooting baskets after school when one of the guys looked at me and said, "Hey, look at Kees, he looks like one hawk!"  O-k-a-y, that stuck and I've been Hawk ever since.

About 17 years ago I signed up for the Muzzle Loader Mailing List when I found it on the Web.  A requirement was that you have a pseudonym so I put Hawk.  Shortly after posting that I got an email from a member who said HE was Hawk and I could bloody well find a different name.  After some cogitation (after all, I didn't want to be Hawk-2) I thought that, since I was in Alaska and everyone associates Alaska with Winter, I would assume the name of Winter Hawk and I've been using that ever since.

Incidentally, the Kees referenced earlier is a good Dutch name (I'm from the old country, and all that) and is pronounced like it was spelled Case.  Just so you know....
