dying pants and shirt

Does anyone use a commercial dye to do their clothing? I joined the powderhorn clan and they want us to have brown pants, and I'd like to dye my pants and shirt brown and green. I'd like to know if someone does it and how I can do mine, the wife is not wanting to do it as it seems it can stain her washer and anything else it touches. I need it done in a couple of weeks.

The only way I have ever dyed things was in a large pot with (RIT mostly) dye and hot water. Simple and fast with no mess around the appliances. I stained my pants the same way with tea. Good luck.
