kid up the street knows I have a small cannon.  (1.25 inch bore x 28 inch tube)    He came up with a high school math/physics project.  Wants me to fire the cannon from one side of the Susquehanna.  He will have a video camera and stop watch set up on the other side of the river.   The stop watch time will be visible on the video as well as the cannon on the far shore.    The idea is to measure the time between the flash and when the report is heard  and then calculate the distance across the river using the speed of sound.   I agreed provided the teacher approves the project and the local LEO's have no objection.

Now that is a great idea!   thmbsup  I need to start trolling the schools and offering to supply the cannon for scientific tests. Heck, I might even be able to drum up a police escort to keep the crowds away. School sanctioned and state approved playing with a cannon, how cool would that be?
I am the one your mom warned you about!

Better make sure there is nothing in the line of fire on the opposite shore .. especially the kid with the stop watch.  bunkr

I'd be more interested in how long it takes the projectile to make the trip,.....as would any thinking person being targeted by said cannon!   bunkr   How long I got to run???   pnic    ROFL

Blank load only
Although I was tempted to fire live loads on the beach out over the ocean to see range.

Sounds like a plan... I am working with scouts in my area on Black powder and may have to bring this idea up! Let us know -

I have been told to use a wax load in mine - much cheaper than lead
