As far as soaking the ram rod in coal oil,not kerosene,it's all a matter of degree's. Can you tie your ram rod in a knot and not splinter? Nope. Is it VERY slightly more "flexible"? Yes. SLIGHTLY.

Your still not going to be able to abuse it or be any less careful,but in the off chance you "goof up" a little,I just might help.

I love the smell of coal oil in the morning.....it ranks right up there with new snow tires...    cuch    or maybe I'm just different?   ucrzy

I love new mud tires on my Jeep.

Coal oil.........not so much.

I soak mine in linseed oil and I like the smell. I once slowly bent a rod from end to end without a creak ,now whether it was just a great hickory split or if it was the oil I dont know
