Blackfeet

At 90% they are actually a pretty good training aid as well. You can monitor any finching that may occur and at the same time not damage the nipple. We used to make up dummy rounds for training the juniors on the Highpower team.

Watauga

Look like they would not be as easy to drop as #11 caps. [hmm]
And you might be able to see them on the ground if you did drop them. [hmm]

Blackfeet is likely right about flinching. I think a spare nipple filed to accept the ring caps would be good to have in shooting box.

Finchley here, and have run into the same problem many of you have - expensive and hard to find percussion caps.  I shoot a 50 cal with a #11 nipple and will definitely try the ring caps mentioned.  I'm requesting the local Gandermountain to stock #11.  The cheapest there was about 5 cents  a cap, though.  Lately, via internet sources it's more like 8+ cents per cap. Rediculous.  Will try to get and use the ring caps this weekend and give y'all feedback.  Thanks for the tip.

Finchley, I bought 800 ring caps. Only $4.   ROFL Did you get to try some out?

West Texan

The ring caps I got still work on the TC hawken. and my revolvers. Any of you have results of trying these?

Red Badger

I did demonstrations last weekend at the Great Southren Plains Rendezvouse for the Boy Scouts and went theough about 400 ring caps and about 1/4 pound of 4F powder demonstrating both percussion and flint ignition systems... you should see the looks of aw on a kids face when they see the smoke curl out of the barrel after 5 grains of powder is touched off...  :mini-devil-28492:

My .32 Cherokee barrel lights off reliably with the ring caps..replaced the nipple on it right after i got it with a hotshot nipple I think it was called....has a small hole onna side next to the threads if I remember right...
Works really good as long as it is absolutely open to start with...they even touch off the unmentionable..(pyrodex :-&)

I used the ring caps this week on TC Hawken and investarms Hawken.  Good reliable results with both. You have to keep path clear and file nipple so caps fit snugly.  I am keeping the regular caps in reserve.  They touch off finer grade powder better than course grade powder.

On the use of ring caps. They are corrosive like old primers in eastern block centerfire ammo. However that should give them a long shelf life. The plastic will degrade so it is best to store them in a cool dark storage.  I had one ring on a work bench in sun light. It became brittle after a few days. Just bought som more today at a surplus grocery at  $2.00 for 432.

Why would being corrosive like eastern block primers extend shelf life? I will admit little knowledge of shelf life of primers , mine, American made,  have gone bang after 20 years. Is there a difference?

West Texan

I may be wrong on that but I have read that the corrosive primers have a much longer and stable shelf life, even more than standard primers. I am trusting the internet :blech:

The corrosive element in the old primers was usually Mercury. I have some WWII Austrian ammo that states "Quicksilver Free" (translated) because they don't contain Mercury.
Personally, I don't use the toy caps for that reason.

Yet they are sold for children to use. What a world we live in. cuch

I found some German made roll caps but have not figures how to use them in Muzzle loading.  1000 for a 1.50. You can't get tap-o-cap. I am looking for a re-useable copper,or brass cup to,test them. That would be lots of work!!!!! For limited return.
There's a fellow on Cast Boolet forum thats making a Cap punch, Brush Hippie tested and said it worked best with pie tins for the aluminum. He did a you tube video on it.
