thmbsup Excellent photo Bernie. I believe ol Tom Selleck took on Mr Hestons mantle in hollywierd. I've watched his interview with oprah and he pretty well owned it when she tried to bash.

I hate to be picky but there are two very glaring things wrong with this picture... There are several other things but they are not as glring as the 2 I spotted right away...

We don't know at what stage of the firing process this picture was taken, and neither do we know if there was any intent to be HC to any particular period. Just glad to see a picture of the man with a muzzleloader in his hands.

I should have put this under the photo.

Charlton Heston, a.k.a. "Bill Tyler" in the movie "The Mountain Men", took to loading and shooting a patched round ball rifle like a duck to water.  North American Muzzleloader Hunting host Toby Bridges enjoyed the opportunity to spend a few days with him at a Colorado rendezvous, where the movie enjoyed it's national premier (thanks to portable projection equipment trucked in for the event).  During the day, Heston fit right in with the black powder crowd, partaking in several shooting matches.  In the photo above, he prepares to take a shot at an egg at 50 yards...shooting a big bore Hawken.

That clears up a bit of the question but  "In the photo above, he prepares to take a shot at an egg at 50 yards...shooting a big bore Hawken."  I have issues with his finger on the trigger I  am anal about that even though in ths case it is perfectly safe because the hammer is resting on the nipple... I just don't like to see pictures like that.

Could also be that the shot has been taken, and he is lowering the rifle to observe the target.  Seems more likely this than any thing else.   Would of had to be a windy day to clear out the smoke, but who knows the time frame as to when the picture was actually snapped.

Wooeee, I am so waylate to this party, but I just came across this thread with the great picture of Charlton Heston. I've always loved the "What's wrong with this picture" puzzles and I gotta agree with Pilgrim, I think it is pretty obvious he has taken the shot - just look at the expression on his face...HE MISSED!  hdslp ROFL

Hammer is down and finger on the trigger.   One of the greats , no question !

I tend to agree, follow through with the shot just taken, looking at the hole, and the rifle is still pointed down range.

Reading this again I  remembered  Keith Casteel  made a flint lock for him. I'll  see if I  can get a picture of it.
