Way too much time on my hands this week.  Was casting some REAL bullets for my .58 rifle when I looked over and saw my .62 fowler sitting there...enquiring minds want to know...so I tried a patched .58 REAL in place of the .600 RB I shoot.  Nice fit.  Anyone try this before?  Thunderstorms are keeping me off the range to try it out.

It'll be an interesting experiment for certain. Will be looking for up dates.

Shooting it should not be a problem but once it starts to tumble the groups will probably open up fairly fast and not be very consistant

Now you have me wondering -- if you cut/filed some slow spiral grooves around the bullet, would it impart even a little spin to it.  Maybe enough for accuracy at short ranges?

flintboomer

Probably not.
The Forster "rifled" shotgun slug was proved to fly reasonably straight because of the weight forward design not because of the grooves on the sides.

And then you could probably use the same design for a ML smoothbore.  But why would you when the roundball works well?  In fact, I often wondered why they didn't routinely use roundball in the modern shotgun rather than various slug designs.

My search for a .610+_ conical has been fruitless.  I modified some Lyman cast foster style slugs for a 16 for smoothbore pistol (lubed and sized to fit) but didn't get far in my tests when someone talked me out of the pistol.  The 20 gauge Lyman slugs are too small for use in the .62 smoothie I have, although a pulled 20 gauge Brenneke slug is good and tight.  Since I only have one of these, I haven't tried them.
