Got to shoot the .40 cal. today that Mike built for me.  Again I was  pressed for time, but at least I was able to see it's a shooter! 40 grs. 3f, .390 cast balls with .010 prelude OX-YOKE patches. I want to shoot it several more times before trying to work on the sights to make sure it's the shooter, not the rifle that needs adjusting. I do know it is shooting low as I was holding at the very top edge to get this grouping. I flinch really bad on the sixth shot. After 5 no fires on the seventh, cold fingers and  replacing the used flint I had been using, I jerked number 7 really bad.  Overall I'd say it's a great rifle.

That's a fine looking little rifle.  Mongrel does excellent work.
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.

Black Jack

Great looking rifle. Very clean, simple, uncluttered design. I want to ask what the name (or school) would be for that general style of rifle? Also, what size of barrel (distance between the flats and length) did you use?

It's a generic southern rifle with a 42" x 3/4" .40 caliber barrel -- a Montana, I was told, but it's unmarked and for the price I got it the fact that it was of visibly premium quality was enough.

I'm aware that iron-mounted southern rifles are sometimes, at least loosely, categorized into schools, but the details of these particular individual schools are something I'm not up to speed on. What I build is a general representation of the type, roughly post-1830, and depending on who might be evaluating it, and how strictly, it would fit in pretty much everywhere or pretty much nowhere.
