not sure if this is where this goes, but for cheap PC wool blankets get you a couple of good all wool army blankets in the OD green, and some bottles of dark brown rit dye. i dyed two blankets with 2 bottles and they came out a really nice brown color.. with is better than the OD green color

Good idea army blankets are not too expensive yet. thmbsup
Do you suppose they could be Walnut dyed? [hmm]

Dumb question time.
Is OD green not HC or did the greens go more to the Kelly/ Forrest colors back in the 1760-1840's

kybackwoodsman, Good to see you back! post when you can thmbsup

i wanna try walnut dye on them, we will see. ive been told that the OD green is not HC/PC and if used at juried events mat cause a rucuss. most the events i got to aint a problem, but its nice to not have to worry bout it later on.

My personal experience is that if you use the Rit dye in the SCARLET shade on the issue green army blanket you will get a deep rich maroon color.

I will take that over walnut any day.

im gonna have to try the scarlet dye.. might be intresting.  we did use the blanket to line my winter frock with, you talk about warm!! out all weekend the first of feb, cold damp rainy weather in a long shirt breechcloat legging and centerseams, my coat kept me plenty warm. also made a dang good pillow at night when under my blankets.

Do you have to remove the existing green dye?

Do you have to remove the existing green dye?
NO! but the existing color will change the final color compared to what you would get if you were dying a white or nearly white material with the same dye.

kybackwoodsman

this is the color it turned

flintboomer

Hard to tell much except that it came out dark. Are you happy with it? Do us a favor and add a short description of how it looks.

Which dye did you end up using?

mtnmike

Would like to line a coat with one, betcha it would be warm. [hmm]

kybackwoodsman

well it aint od green anymore. just a med brown with a slight green tint. i used 2 bottler dark brown rit dye for 2 blankets. mite try black next time or a maroon or scarlet. i got this one lining my frock. really warm!

Did you sew it to your frock or just make a smaller wool type jacket that it slips over, like the old army coat liners that are removable from the field jackets.

True Walnut dye wont be strong enough to cover the O/D on the blanket. I think the scarlett is a good choice. In the art world, furniture particularly, we use the "Green kills Red,Red kills Green rule when adjusting or color matching. Blue is a milder choice, especially on Cherry. If your cherry turns out a tad red,A little blue over it give it a BEAUTIFUL Brown that has to be scene to be belived!

sewn into the frock, just the body part sleeves were left unlined to keep it from bindin in my arms and across the shoulders.

Just wondering if anyone could offer any information as to one of the original questions on this post, namely is it definite that the OD Army blanket color is or is not HC/PC? Without anything definite to go on, it seems like that shade of green might be pretty darn close to that which might have been used sometime during the 18th or 19th century. I think there might be somewhat of a predudice against them since they are common old surplus blankets that anyone can own without breaking the bank instead of expensive "Guaranteed HC" gear that the well heeled can afford. This attitude is most likely to show up at a juried event. I have seen a lot of bright green capotes at (casual weekend) rondies in a shade that seems way too vibrant a green to have existed back then.  Of course, using the brown Rit dye to darken them is an easy way to avoid any questions, but just wonderin'.
