compression of air,prehaps I see a possible deficiency in mine ,I need to change the tip a bit-where the char goes in,Ileft a side slot to facilitate removal of the char perhaps this lowered the compessoin ,I have to change it and sshorten it accordingly.

T still get nothing but warm out of mine it seems to have good compresion

I've seen two of these contraptions in all the years of doing this silly game,and NEVER saw one that worked as advertised. The only fire they encountered was when thrown into one! Can not beat flint and steel.

I know a guy who has the expensive all wood type. I have used and it works, The coal it makes is fairly small but enough to get a fire started. The trick is a bit of char on the tip, a fast snap of the piston, pull it apart and get the little coal onto a bigger piece of char, then start the fire in your nest just like if you had used flint and steel.

The piston costs way too much for me to think about buying one.

I make and sell allot of these, there two things that need to happen for them to work!! that is a proper fit in the bore, both for how long the plunger is, it needs to go all the way to the bottem, and the oring or string when lubed with petroleum jelly or chicken fat, pig fat, needs to seal the bore ,and when hit to make the coal the rod should bounce back up a bit. then you need to move fast to get the rod out before it burns all the oxigen up. my geuss is that your rod is not hitting bottem, the cup in the end of the rod to hold the tinder is to small or to big, to deep, or the gasket is not sealing it well. or not enough lube.

a lot of wood is too porus and it allows air to escape.....and even a good one will often "blow-out".

I used to make and sell these for a living at trade shows...."Fire From Air" was my pitch and it really amazed a lot of people. I would fire them 5 or 600 times a day. Once you get the hang of it it is awsome. These are so much better than the flint and steel!! And more primative.

if its looseing air from the bottom through the pores, try a few drops of superglue with the piston cleaned and standing upright, that will seal the pores, just dont run it down the sides, leave it for a few days to cure.
