I've been to several canal lock and sites where they used to be. in Ohio there are several locks being restored for history sake. and there is a place in Indiana called  "Metamora".http://www.metamoraindiana.com/ they have a working canal system and grist mill that is run from it.. they have alot of the original buildings from that era as well. i believe this was a branch off the White water canal system.. it connected Cincinnati Ohio into Indiana. my folks always took us to neat vacations spots, but Metamora was one that stood out the most. if we went there it was for a lesson in history.. i actually talked my 5Th grade class teacher to take us there for a field trip. my own daughter also did the same thing. it was the first time for everyone to ride in an canal boat. pulled by horse and everything. it was the first for my wife and her family as well.. she has taken her fiance there and is planning to take her son, when he is old enough.. if we forget these things it would be a shame. i recommend you go if your ever in the area.. thanks for reading... flwa

Grand Rapids, Ohio has canal ride, working saw mill, and shop that showcases the canal system that ran along the Maumee River.  Part of the Toledo, Ohio parks system.

It is a little known fact that when Andrew Jackson made his trip to Washington DC from Nashville TN to be sworn in as Pres. he made the entire journey by water on the internal canal system.  He traveled by steamboat and canal boat for the entire distance.

Ohio was filled with canal systems, locks on every river and puddle.  The old dams and locks are visible all the way up the Muskingum River on the old navagation route.

I live in a town called Canal Winchester. Wanna geuss why it's called that?? [hmm] There's a little town a couple miles down the road called Lockville. Yep Ohio is filled with old canal bed and stone locks. Even structures that date from that time frame. Railroad killed them mosiquito filled open sewer ditches. Boy those were the good old days! There is even a couple places around here where there were canal "bridges" across the creeks (which fed the system).  Some of the man made lakes were essentially canal resivoirs ( ala Buckeye Lake).  The walnut trees grow abundantly in the  old canal bed, must floated a few million walnuts back in the days huh?
