The Mink oil they are reffering to is  rndered from mink fat, the stuff in sno seal is silicone. BIIIIGGGGG difference if your wanting to use it for patch lube, only use the rendered mink fat. strpot strpot

The yardage to clean in the .69 rifle makes it a pain in the breech. So, brewing up a different patch lube. Trying to use hard cake natural soap with other ingredients to make a paste lube, the idea being that the lube residue softens the fouling and also supplies the soap for the wet cleaning patch. So far found out that natural soap (not the chemical plant detergent stuff) dissolves in lanolin with a double boiler. It's slow. Add a little water to get the soap to dissolve and then evaporate the water to thicken the whole mix into as stiff a paste as wanted.
A 50/50 mix is a real slick low temperature melting wax that washes away with water. Haven't tried any other adjuncts yet.
Today my better 2/3's wants to see if it blows bubbles.

I have melted crisco and dipped my patch material in it.  Works great if you dont leave the load in the barrel.  I left it loaded for 2 or 3 weeks.  When I tried to shoot it the cap went off but no boom.

One part olive oil, one part beeswax and one part lanolin makes great hand balm. Works great on quilting finger. And where the axe handle wore the hide off my palm. And it's a very slick and persistent patch and conical lube (what I boiled it up for) that won't melt inside the bag. Would probably need more olive oil for cold weather but that doesn't happen much here.

I use pillow ticking that I buy at a cloth store.  my TC Hawkins 58cal likes .024.  I tear it in strips and soak the rolled up strips in moose milk.  Then
put ball down barrel with starter.  Take patch knife and cut off excess.  Penn. Pedersoli 45 ca long rifle i use .018 ticking. When I go to the store to buy the ticking I take along a caliper. If you want .024 you buy .022.  When you wash it it comes out .024.  My wife use .015 in her Charles Dayel 50cal she use .010.  Now what does moose milk consist off.  Four oz. cutting oil (machine tool) water soluable, five oz. Murphy's soap and the rest water in 320z. jug.  We can shoot all day with out cleaing bore. hntr

Just on a wild hair, I decided to try something I read about on one of the forums (can't remember which one). It's three parts GOJO hand cleaner and one part water, put it in a bottle and shake it up. I've used it for my last two range sessions and am in awe at how well it works. Accuracy is superb and fouling is virtually non existant. 60 shot range session yesterday and never had to swab. Decided to try using it to clean at the range after I was done shooting as I have an hour and a half ride home before I can give it a thorough cleaning, worked great. Ran a couple ticking patches soaked in it down the barrel to remove an fouling, then plugged the vent and poured some in the barrel with a little extra water. Put my thumb over the end of the barrel and shook it up pretty good, dumped it out and rinsed it out with water a couple times. Barrel was bright clean. Poured some over the lock, the fouling just melted away. Brushed a little and rinsed with water. As a side benefit, just pour a little over your hand to clean them and wipe off with paper towel. Talk about an all-in-one solution. Haven't tried it for cold weather yet, a little warm for that. Going to put some an ticking and throw it in the freezer to see how it does. Also going to mix some with alcohol instead of water to see if that would be better for winter use. I'll let you know how it does.

If you use mink oil remember to grab the little critter tight behind the head; they can turn & bite quicker than you can jerk.  The advantage to using Crisco instead of other lubes is that if you sprinkle on a little flour, you can come up with a pretty fair biscuit when you fire.

Can TOW mink oil be used as a seasoning for barrel as well as a good patch lube, and will it rust the barrel?

Hanshi

Well, NO and NO,  While mink oil makes a very good patch lube, I'd recommend a little thyme, sage and red pepper to season that barrel; not mink oil.
