Ned I be checkin the things in my 32 caliber bag, which buy the way is 7 1/2" X 6" with a 3/4 length flap made of a dark golden tan leather with a hand wove strap of dark gold and blue.  Lets see I gots here a patch knife reworked from an old paring knife blade dont never throw away nothin never know when I might needs it a osage handle that I done reamed out for a powder measure. Here is a small bag of cleaning patches, that little bitty hole in that barrel sure does get all cloged up quick, and two cute little rawhide bage made by a feller that calls his self Rock Creek, one for caps and one for balls, a roll of patching and the tools and foo fraw needed to keep it a shootin.  On a lace on the strap is a small ball block with 3 balls and a small short starter.  My powder horn is a small 6" horn that I use with 3f for hunting.  I also carry a game bag made of burlap with red and black stripes woven in and lined with blue cotton cloth.  The old lady is sickly so I never hunt very far from home nor stay over night so I don't worry about extra cloths or a lot of supplys.  If I want to I carry some cold corn bread and jerkey.

I know ye ask about one of them good old flint guns but a while back I got a chanst to trade for one of them new fangled guns what uses somethin called a per cussin cap.  It was made in some valley up in Cun net cet specally for huntin sqwills and it's a jim dandy for that.

Iffin you gots any more questions just write to me I gets down to the tradin store abouts ever 6 months or so.  That feller that runs it will read me yow writin he can read purty good and he will write a re ply for me too.  Doug

I wonder............if he was that poor, he might have a smoothbore rather than a rifle.  A load of shot and he was set for squirrel or any fowl who happened by.  Probably a hunter of opportunity.  That smoothbore would also work with PRB for a deer gun -- or bear if so inclined.  I'd think the smoothbore would also be less expensive than a rifle.

Dryball

Your right...a smoothbore is more likely. but I need this info so I can carry the right gear when I carry my .32. Right now I'm lacking a smoothbore....but with luck that will soon change. Then I'll be picking your brains for smoothbore gear. ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL

Most all that has been mentioned is pretty much what I would be carrying but must say that I would be packing a small fire kit cause it don't weigh much and can get down pretty small.  Even by todays standereds, fire makins is a good thing to be carring in the woods.  A few hours hunt can turn into an over night disaster very quickly and without warning.  And believe me, if it can happen, it can happen to me.  I got myself into more unexpected scrapes than any ten people I know. I would prefer to have a little extra gear to insure survival than take a chance on the alternative.  I don't think I would carry lead and ladle though, unless I expected to stay out for several days.  In most small calibers (like .32) a large number of balls would be carried without difficulty, and I probably would have more than enough to last me even if had to stay a couple of days extra.  Having all that is needed to keep my rifle shooting would be there, one of Neds rod pullers would be a good idea as well.  A small burning lens is a good idea maybe, a fire can be started with these as well, plus who hasn't had to remove hard to see splinters, etc.
