This reminds me of what happened loooong ago at the beginning of time.  God showed to Adam and Eve great fields of grain and said, "this is wheat and can make great bread to eat".  Then he showed them several other fields covered in grains, vegetables and fruits.

Later that day Satan was talking with both Adam and Eve when the subject of food came up.  So Satan, in his infinite wisdom, said, "God was right, this rye grain especially makes good bread and is the most nutritious of the grains".  He paused and then continued.  "Reminds me, hang around a bit and I'll show you how rye can also make a good drink to wash that bread down with".  :mini-devil-28492:

For sure, Satan spawned a lot of grain based liquids. It was easier to transport several jugs of liquid corn squeezings instead of several wagons of dried corn to market in the 1700's especially over the almost non existent roads. It even led to a revolt called the whiskey rebellion in western PA. Taxes were not received well by the independent types on the frontier.

The meads my son has concocted are going to taste great. No grains involved except for his brain lube before the process started.

As I type this it is snowing again.  But this IS Maine.

Rye makes a fine distilled drink, quite equal to bourbon.  Their taste, of course, is nothing alike and I enjoy both.  Been completely out since September, gotta remedy that.

What, completely out?    pnic   That is unacceptable! The shame of this situation will haunt and disgrace our family for generations to come.   :'(

Yes, yes, I know.  I am now pulling my hair out, some of it at least, and cutting myself - little shallow cuts but they do sorta break the skin.  I shall dress in rags for the next week and accept the rude comments & actions hurled my way.  I blame being housebound for this situation as I can't walk on this bad knee and no DL pretty much seals the deal.  Be that as it may I know I have shamed our lineage and accept my punishment.  :'(

This is getting ridiculous, months without any spirits - I have picked up some Guinness a few times and an occasional bottle of wine but that only consumed with the Sunday meals I cook.  But like most of us I do enjoy an evening or two a week, ensconced in my recliner with a TV across the room or a book from the local library firmly held in the grip of my hot, sweaty hands and, at my right elbow scarcely 15" away, a glass tumbler containing a generous two fingers of bourbon or rye.  Talk about pain-free relaxation!

Forgive me for mentioning this but we all sometimes require a note of sympathy if only to emphasize our current emotional/mental state as it affects our mood and actions.  I mourn the loss of my DL which leaves me housebound.  I can't walk other than limping from room to room at home - it could be July before the knee replacement.  I can't see out of my right eye as I await THAT surgery.  And new: I can't hear out of my left ear.  The "ear thing" will need to be evaluated sooner rather than later as this particular set of symptoms is quite unlike the usual suspects.  The brain...ah, yes the old brain.  But if you know hotfxr then no explanation of the way it functions (or not) is necessary.  One other thing....and I'll leave it at that.

There is no sin in a small libation of your choice a couple of times a week. The problems arise when they are consumed at the drop of the hat. Having been raised in a family with a minor drinking problem, I don't condone over consumption of the distilled libations. However, as a treat after a bad day or a pain medicine before bed time, as long as you control the booze and it doesn't control you, I see no shame in a toddy or two as required for a balanced life. Try to stay positive Hanshi. Life is good when you are breathing on your own, no tubes in or out of your body and you are mobile, even if a bit diminished.
