How to get rid of glue

lIKE MANY OF YOU I make use of empty bottles that contained perhaps food and maybe other things after they are empty.  They might hold ball, caps, flints or a plethora of other things.  When I use the glass or plastic jars, bottles and such I like to get the former labels off; they block what's inside and look tacky.

But many of these containers may let you get the paper mostly scraped off but leaves the glue stuff on, seemingly for eternity. Does anyone know a quick, non-hazardous way to get the stuff off?  I've tried alcohol, water soaks, ammonia and other things as well.   If you know a way I'm all ears...so to speak.

Maybe  acetone would work on glass bottles. Periodically I machine plexiglas which comes with adhesive paper on both sides. On old sheets the adhesive paper has been on a long time and hard to get it along with the glue off. I have used wd-40 and scrubbed it off. After that dish liquid and hot water to remove wd-40

Maybe one of the more user friendly paint removers?  Not one of those that say to use only outside.

rub 3 in 1 oil on it , let it sit a few munutes and some 0000 steel wool will take it off ! been doing it this way for 25 years !

Thanks, guys.   I'll try the easiest one first and go on to the next if I can't get it to work.
