couple of bags I recently did

couple of bags I recently turned out , one is made of oak tanned leather , should last forever  lol it`s 9 inches wide by 8 inches high , has two smaller pockets and the large pocket inside , 2nd bag is the same size and pattern but made of elk skin , it has the same pockets  , and main storage area and a strap across the back  that could be used to hold a bag axe , or knife !

Muzzleloader Magazine (July/August) had a big write-up on Charles S. Brown, a master maker of bags, horns and other items that are artwork.  He only makes items historically documented in his research and using the same tools, methods & materials of that era.  He doesn't do "fantasy" or "fancy" just authentic versions of things that actually existed.  Want to see some authentic accoutrements that are like the settlers/long-hunters/trappers owned and used in the late 18th and very early 19th century?   MY crude fiddling around is filthy trash (huge understatement) compared with his "crude".

I hate to admit it, but my current shooting bag is "period correct" to circa 1990.  I am using a nylon fanny pack........there, I said it out loud.   

Those are indeed nice bags.

I`ve been making them since 1979 , and they have evolved quite a bit , first one was`nt bad , but it was made from what I could get , suede ,  since then I`ve looked at a lot of originals and copies of originals , the only thing I do different is sewing them with artificial sinew , there are bags I made 30 years back that are still being used , I use artificial sinew to help bring down prices ,  good linen thread is`nt cheap ,at least not in my area , and my stuff is made to used , and like the old ones used roughly , they are completely hand stitched and no two are identical ! sold a lot of them ,and given a few away over the years ! it`s more hobby than business , and if I`d never bought that first muzzleloader I dont think I`d be doing them at all ! there are quite a few scattered across the country , and a couple in europe , so I guess I have`nt done to bad !

I don't do H/C & P/C I just do the best I can.  I don't start out making stuff crude; "crude" is simply my default mode.  If I could do better I certainly would; but I can't and it doesn't bother me the least bit.  Yeah, it would be nice to own an authentic rifle, dress in linen and buckskin and be able to pass for a 1790s longhunter or farmer.  But too many folks don't seem to understand how much money you need to be poor.  And when you ain't got it you can't do it.  So I emulate a 1960s to 1980s woods roamer and nere-do-well.  But it's fun, ain't it.

actually not bad ! I`d bet a ton of old original pieces did`nt look as good when they were new ~!
