This is a perennial subject in the Civil War reenacting hobby. A musket is a long-barreled, smooth-bored infantry shoulder arm. A rifled musket is one that started out as a smooth-bore and then was rifled (and probably had a rear sight installed) some time after it was made. A rifle-musket is one that was manufactured with a rifled bore to begin with. A rifle is a short rifle-musket. A carbine is a short rifle. A musketoon is a short musket. And a rose by any other name is still a rose, but a cat is a sneaky little fur-ball that barfs on the furniture.
