A few new Hawks

Got a nice camp Hawk from Beowulf. Too nice to subject it to throwing around. So I picked up a few more. Some are everyday competition throwing Hawks. The taller bladed ones are from Three Rivers and are 5160 steel with narrow blades, all hand forged right here in the good old USA.    I replaced (most) of the hickory handles and turned down some 'Ipe wood to make indestructable handles and give them a bit more weight, On all of them I wrap the handles with hemp cord and seal them up with beeswax. It keeps the wood dry and makes a nice grip surface along with adding a bit of shock absorption. These things just fly to the targets.



Those 5160 Hawk heads really hold a razor sharp edge.

I think I now know why they always want to sell you extra handles. Of course I will throw the 'Ipe handled Hawks one at a time. I have too much time and energy invested into those to chance splitting a handle.

And with a bit of idle time on my hands, we can make them pretty.



This actually now is a stealth hawk. It looks ornamental but has a sharp bite.

You need to tell everyone you were aiming for that handle. My grandson stuck a H&B cricket into the back of the eye on one of my H&B squaw hawks. I don't know if the cricket was that sharp or the squaw was that soft.

I must be lucky , never had that happen !  the fun part is when you figure out how to throw from different distances !  had a hammer poll hawk that was one of the best I`ve ever owned . at the normal range most use you`d throw it the usual way , double the distance you`d have to change the grip on the handle , and at triple the distance you threw it hammer poll forward and it would stick in the target upside down !  danged thing was cast steel , and a cousin of mine slapped a rock with it one cold january day and the hammer head went "ping " and dropped off !  even after that it was still a pretty decent tossing hawk !

Beautiful hawks.  I might have to try the sinew wrap on my 2hawks longhunter.
