Our club (Ohio Valley Muzzle Loading Gun Club) held it's second shoot of the new season and though I didn't compete I took my new  Mongrel built .40 cal. southern flintlock out for some practice and sighting in. The rifle performed well....but there is most certainly something out of whack with the nut behind the butt plate!! On the other hand I had the pleasure of sharing the practice range with Mark Herman (AKA) PaPa. Mark was trying out a new portable shooting bench he built and said he wanted to tinker with his .50 cal. under hammer. After two targets that I would have been very proud of, a couple of misfires, and a few adjustments, Mark looked up at me from shooting a three shot group and said "now that's what it should look like" .  Here  is his three shot group. The load specs are; 80 grains of 3F with a .015 pre lubed patch and .495 RB. Three shots from a table shooting bench at 30 yards.

Would it be possible to know more about that UH rifle ?  Even a pic or 3, I'm in process of putting a
Blue Grouse action with a Rayl .54 bbl.  Hope she shoots as well.    ....Tom

Tom  I'll see if I can get photos of the gun. Mark has had some issues trying to get his photos to post and I didn't take a photo of his rifle yesterday. hdslp
Here are the gun details that I have.

1 1/8" x 42" Green Mountain  1 in 48 twist .50 caliber barrel.
Deer Creek under hammer action.
Anschutz Olympic rear sight, and the front sight is a post and bead by Paul Griffiths.

Tom,
I have sent a few pics of the rifle to Woody to post but basically what I have is; Deer Creek action, which is identical to what you got from Bruce, with a Green Mountain barrel, as Wooody described. My sights are mounted on dovetailed bases that are soldered to the barrel and allow me to remove them or change them as needed. The rear base is cantilevered over the wrist, to get closer eye relief, and a hole drilled so the barrel mounting screw can be reached. I also raised the comb to put my eye in alignment with the sights in a prone, or benched, shooting position. This is a modified chunk gun that I built 25+ years ago and is still going strong. There is also provision for a cant block to be attached to the barrel. The rifle was originally made to shoot 60 yard chunk matches and I hope to improve on what I shot yesterday, being a 30 yard match, with a few more days of fun in the sun. What you have is the basis for a fine shooting rifle. The action is simple and sound and Ed's barrels are very hard to beat. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Good looking rifle, is that an original action ? I've got a real nice block of Oregon Myrtle wood for my client's UH.  HARD wood, with some figure.  Will post pic's after action gets here.  Thanks

Papa

Tom,
The only thing original about the action is that I am the original owner. It is an early Deer Creek action, probably 25 years old. I have used these for chunk guns, offhand rifles and a 12 gauge trap gun.
