Here is the latest hawk that I have been working on. The head is a Made in the USA hand forged 5160 folded steel blade that we have been buying from 3R. I throw away the hickory handle that comes with it, carve out a new one using Ipe wood (it is not PC, but it's the third hardest wood in the world), wrap the handle with high strength hemp cord, then seal the whole thing up with beeswax. I worked on the head to round and bevel the handle hole to make a better fit. The heads cost over $65 each and there has been some consistancy problems with them. Since we are using these for throwing competitions, a little difference in balance and weight messes with your accuracy, so I am playing with forging the heads myself. I have a long way to go, but I am enjoying every minute.

How's this one throw with all that blade under the heel?

And I'dlike to be clear on what your doing. You buy the $65.00 heads and completely re-do them? That seem's a bit high to rework. A friend bought a slew of them from harbour freight, for the 10/15 dollar range and re worked those. really turned out quite nice. Fairly P/C too!

A friend of mine bought them and came to me to make new handles. Then since I have the bees, that's why I used the wax to seal them. He gave this one to me because the blade was so different than the other three. This one is narrower top to bottom and wider front to back than the others and tends to get a little wild in the air. I thought that for $65 there should not be that much of a difference. I will check out the ones at Harbor Freight, it might be easier to modify those that trying to make one from bar stock like I am now. Thanks.
