Anyone ever make or have a use for Birch Oil???   When viewing some youtube vids on tinger-fungus earlier, there were other vids listed that talked about makeing  "Birch Oil".

One fella mentioned that the oldtimers use to use this stuff for staining gun stocks.  THere are other uses for this stuff as well, such as a tar or glue etc.

I was wondering if any of you guys ever tryed this on your gun stocks & if so, how did it turn out?

Seems easy enough to make, dig a hole, place small tin can in bottom to catch drippings, pack soil around the can but don't cover it.  In the larger tin (cookie tin or the like) make small hole in bottom for oil to drain out into that smaller catch can.  Fill (pack) big tin with with Birch Bark and cover with lid.  Place larger tin over smaller can & make a seal with soil around its base.  Start fire & build it so it covers the entire larger tin.  Let it burn for at least 45 min to an hour maybe longer depending on size of the larger tin.  Pull coals away,  remove larger tin and retrieve the smaller tin can and inside should be some Birch Oil.

The other bonus here is inside the larger tin...you will be left with charcoal to use later!

Check it out on YouTube.  Ya learn something new every day!

Holy crap! This stuff sells for about $15 an ounce! The net says, therefor it must be true, that birch oil is an excellent leather dye and preservative. I bet it would be good for wood as well like you said.  thmbsup

Now all I have to do is find some birch trees,  they are fairly rare in this lopcality.....  :mini-devil-28492:

Go for it...Birch beer may be more popular here than oil...
