Ok here is my first attempt at making an Atlatl. These not only predate firearms but they predate the Bow and Arrow. Every primitive culture developed a type of Altatl and were even used against early firearms by the Aztec ( with out much success against Spanish armor)

The Dart made from 2 sections of dowel rod (I need to get some river cane)

My tip forged from a piece of iron (I need to learn how to knap flint)

Fletching

And of course the Atlatl

The proof is in the pudding

I think with pratice I could get accurate enough for hunting deer at 25 yards
Next comes accuracy tests more video to follow.

Well, you gonna pull them pistols or whistle Dixie?

While the Atlati would not penetrate plate armor it would go through chinemail, and became one of the most feared weapons of Aztec faces by the Spanish as it was all most imposable to remove the dart without causing more damage to the victim.
All gave some Some gave all

These are fascinating devices and I've often thought of trying my hand at making both the atlatl and the dart.  While the same effect can be gained by the use of a rope, ribbon or even just a strip of cloth, the ease and preciseness are difficult to reproduce.  Running once again across the previous thread has caused me to consider making the real thing.  If I succeed, I'll post it.  Meanwhile, it will take a goodly bit of time to bring this to fruition.  wtch
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.

Wow. Thank goodness for folks trolling old threads. One of my pagan buddies has been wanting to make one of these for some time now. Since I was not really familiar with this weapon I have not been any help to him. Now thanks to the ever creative souls on TMoTC, I have a place to start.
I am the one your mom warned you about!
