Lots of cheap substitutes out there, depending on what you are willing to settle for. Check Feebay, just search wool blankets. Hundreds should come up. I have bought Hudson Bay blankets for $40 on occasion. In fact, I am selling off some of my over abundance next weekend at the Western National Shoot here in PHX.

Welcome to real life. Automobiles, medical expenses (for self, family, and pets), homes, and appliances are four of the biggest and most consistent drains on disposeable income, and are completely non-negotiable when they come up. I just recently had to decide to buy new tires rather than put the money back toward rifle barrels I need for my building -- and then one of the very few family members I actually care about got into a bind and I sent her the tire money and some more to boot. Needless to say the tires went on the back burner and the rifle barrels were taken completely off the stove. At times like this there's a choice -- grumble about what I can't have and feel sorry for myself, or thank God I have the means to take care of the things that are really important.

A site like this, dedicated to doing things On The Cheap, can be a Godsend when an unexpected expense has suddenly left you with a whole lot less cash to play with than you'd figured on. Hopefully someone here will be able to provide or direct you to what you're looking for.

If you have a goodwill store in your area stop by and check it every so often.  I am often surprised at what I find in our local store for pennies on the dollar. All so check out the goodwill auction site once in a while.  Things go for more than the local store but you can still get some good buys.

Wild Ed hit it ! I have bought many HB nock off wool blankets on that auction. Know that the shipping will often be greater than the final winning bid! Now I havent bought any woolys for over a year but I dout that has changed. It is still a good deal,even if they kind of gouge you on shipping.Also when you do the search, just type in wool and you should get 2-5 pages of stuff to weed through and if you dont see something now check at least 2x a week because they add stuff every day from all across the US.You will also see solid color wool blankets with one stripe,I have gotten thsoe too and like them just as much! If buying online isn't an option for you then you're going to have to spend some time going to garage & estate sales looking for wool blankets along with cash in hand.  You might alos see if a prepaid credit card would work in case you found something online at a good price.  I have bought genuine HBC blankets for less than $50 from Goodwill as well as E-bay, but look-alikes such as the JCPenney "Golden Dawn", Pendleton and Fairbo Mills are usually priced less and are every bit as good.  An OD green Army blanket can be dyed brown and then really looks the part, although once you've handled a 100% virgin wool blanket you will never tolerate any percentage of "reprocessed" wool anything.

I almost forgot, check Craig's list for your area, then you can pay cash in a face to face deal.

I would think a pre-paid visa, would be just fine at shopgoodwill.com. You can get those at walgreens or target etc.
Also, as you bid and sfter you register, you can see how much the shipping is as you are signed in and it will know yer zip, thus calculating shipping, pretty handy. Portland and Seattle seem to be the worst for shipping regardless of weight. It is definately NOT actual cost for them, but I believe you will still get it for less than at an antique store.

Here's a real good deal on some wool to use for your bedroll and although the colors aren't HC you're getting the wool for around $1 per pound including shipping at the current price.  Once you do get an appropriate colored blanket you can sew these together into a sleeping bag of sorts and be toasty warm.  Just sleep with the HC blanket on the outside so when the thread counters do a midnight inspection you won't get any demerits.

Last batch I got was from Public Surplus site..bid on two laundry baskets of blankets...paid $12 and daughter used hampers to pack stuff to move..less for the hampers than at Target....got the 11 blankets for free?? well almosts..5 were 100% wool, the  rest all usable..never know where they will pop up...got like new "Golden Dawn" at thrift store..$8..still keep checking..something will come your way....
