You might want to look at shoe maker or leather shop.We found some at a local biker/leather repair shop fairly cheap..I bought have a cow hide for $90.00. I made 2 possibles and 5-6 sheath's for knife's and hawk's and a holster for my derringer..

If you making a shooting bag, the flap can be fairly heavy to keep the bag closed but the rest of the bag needs to be a flexable and not very heavy leather about 4 or 5 oz. or about 1/16" thick.  If you have a Tandy leather shop nearby go there, if not go to their website and order a catalog. They have most anything you want. H12

The design of the bag is what keep's the flap down. I've been using goat,@ 3-4 oz,that's lined and welted. Kentucky hide and leather has the 5-6 oz in bundles if that's what you really want. I think they come in 10 and 25# pack's. Perfect for occational project's. I'll sometime make a bag from that stuff as give away's. My other bag's go for $125-250.

As a matter of fact,I have a lot that I wont be able to use in 3 lifetime's! Send me something in trade, dont lke money changing hand's,rather trade, and I'll send you more than enough to make a bag or 2 and a sheath or two. You'll have to piece together enough for the strap, common on original's,and if you need, the hardware too, ring's needles some thread, maybe a button stud for closure. And,free advice!
