boone was around 5`9 or 5`10 . a bit taller than most . but not that tall by todays standards .  he would probably been comfortable shooting most of todays production muzzle loaders . I`m 5`11 and most cva`s , tc`s , austen &hallecks and such fit rather well ! only rifle I ever had that was a regular production piece that was a bit off was the hatfield rifle I had . length of pull was fine , but the butt of the stock was a bit small !

Actually you're right; we get taller by stretching to see over your heads! blah

All seriousness aside, I am actually a very tall guy stuck in a short guy's body. ROFL
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.

wow, I was gone all weekend and just now got to look at this subject.
I am 6'4". I estimated my length of pull from crook of arm to 1st joint of index finger.
I was comfortable shooting my civil war springfield, which had a 16 inch lop if I remember correctly.
My CVA rifles have an unfortunate habit of punching me in the face with my thumb when I shoot.
And the one CVA that had the nipple blow out and bury a fragment in my forehead probably wouldn't have been as bad if my face had been a few inches further away.
Since I want to spend the cash for a good rifle I figured I should try to get it sized to me. Am I being to liberal with my estimation of my length of pull?
BTW, who is TVM?

chris

Red Badger

TVM is Tennesee Valley Manufacturing http://www.avsia.com/tvm/

One of the best custome manufacturer's I know of.... although Mr. Lange's are right up there also (although I have not had the oppertunity to shoot one)

as for your lop 16 inch is not beyond comprehension I am 6' even and have a 15 inch lop....

I have often wondered if the small size of some guns comes from trying to exactly reproduce early firearms that were specifically built for people of smaller stature. Not about a smaller size of the population, but a individual who was small even by their standards. Just like surviving suits of armor often look like they will only fit a child (because it was made for a child, and didn't get worn out, and that  is why it has survived all these years).
Any Thoughts?

I am looking to by a gun kit and would like your input about different manufacturers.

I am wanting to build an early Virginia style smooth bore, fullstock rifle that would work
from French and Indian war on up. I would like a long barrel (42") and a 17" length of pull

I have looked at :
Pecatonica
Track of the Wolf and
Sitting Fox

I am interested in your opinions on these kits for;
Value for money,
Ease of assembly,
Quality of kit and components,
Turn around and shipping time.

Any other information that you think should be included, or if there are other
manufacturers I should look at, please let me know. It is hard to throw money
blind and I appreciate any input.

Thanks

chris
