Yes you form it as you felt it that is the easiest way to do it when I was a youngster we used to do the cocked hats from blanks and that is where we used the vinagar and steam just an example of the wife's needle felt craft <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/i/?c6gqeo58z7zq863"><img src="http://mfi.re/imgbnc.php/a8ee048771b7853669577050d0b3f4642a1de1eec8cb00183cb74970c4fdc7c74g.jpg" border="0"></a>
bmcret has she tried making a mountain man or women before? That would be cool to have one..

bmcret

No Crazell she hasn't but I'll suggest it she is always open to new markets

Hammerhead

hey bmcret how much wool do you think it would take for a blank. i know jas townsend sells a pound for 30 dollars thats a bit to steep for me

bmcret

Well Kris the weight doesn't change much from batt to felted so if you thik the hat that you wnt to wear weighs 2 lbs then that's what you need

Hammerhead

Kris dont forget the Beaver fur was what the Trappers and Mountain men were after to sell to the Hat makers.
Even today the Beaver Fur felt hats are the Bomb! Stetson XXX Beaver is still the standard?!?(At least in Scout Master Campaign Hats)
Do you make felt the same way with Fur as Wool?!

Smokin_Gun

I had picked up this 4X Beaver hat at the March Rondy at the Desert Marksmen Rifle &Pistol Club...

I should have read that three days ago.... When I shaved my beard off and cut my hair -  I wold have been able to send Kris about a pound and a half of beard trimmings..... The long hair I saved and is going to be used for something in my camp

I haven't shaved or cut my hair since my wedding in 1977,
just don't see the point.

If you want ease of manufacture, and are not too worried about being PC, you can buy wool craft felt and shred it between some carding combs and reduce it back to fibers. Back in college I made a few art pieces with this shredded felt, soaking it (I can't remember what we soaked it in), then laying the different color between two pieces of screen wire and pounding the dickens out of with a mallet. After blotting the moisture off and letting it dry it was very similar in feel to the original wool felt. A classmate made a vest this way, but I have no idea how durable it was.
