Tinkin I might build a set of moc's lined with raccoon fur. Easy enough to do, skin coons, tan hides, trim to fit larger foot pattern, cut out, stitch up and wear?

Good idea. Coon should work good for your area. I use sheepskin myself. But that's only because of how cold it gets around here.

The best way to do it (Not to say you don't know) is to make some low-tops out of coon (center seam works well enough). Then with the liner pair on, measure for the outer moc. Seems to give me a pretty good fit doing it that way.

Now that I've given my expert advice  ROFL I gotta try to find some Moose or thick Deer hide and some Sheepskin for my winter mocs this year.

Did I ever mention that mocs are the only thing I can wear comfortably? So I tend to wear them year round.

What about beaver skin? The fur is softer and Warmer. One large prime hide is all you would need for a pair of mocs.

Micanopy

Our clan didnt wear center seams, one piece side seams wear worn in a high top, about mid calf, fashion, so to maintain Mikasuki tradition we gotta stick with that.

Beaver is a more valuable fur than coon so historically coon would be used because beaver would be sold or traded for more value.

The way I have these figured out is that they will be made with a brain tan whitetail deer buckskin outer layer side seam with a tall wrap around upper legging. Should be interesting. Now the important question is????? will it ever be cold enough this year to wear them?

William

I sure hope it gets cold enough!  You can wear your fur mocs and I'll wear my wool capote!  Have you thought about getting a used sheepskin rug or even a sheepskin car seat and turning it into mocs?

Micanopy

Have sheep, have some nice goat as well. Thinkin along the lines of coons cuz they are easy to tan, i have many many in the freezer and they will wear well if I dont break them down to super soft and dont break down the brain tans as soft so they are a bit thicker than normal. Sheep skin would work but I'd feel like Charlie Sheen in "Hot Shots" "My name? My name is fuzzy bunny slippers"..............

And his girlfriend "little sizling belly?", ROFLMAO! ROFL

How well do you reckon the fur will wear? I was thinking of doing this with a coyote pelt.

Watauga

Sounds like a good idea to me thmbsup
But Mr.Raccoon and Mr.Coyote wont like it much. hntr

I thought I had read somewhere on her about NOT making the inner mocc of the same type as the outter one to prevent the seams from aligning and causing "Tenderfoot"

Hm, not sure, we'd have to prolly glue the two different leathers together to keep them from sloshin around?

Bulldog lady

nother hog hunt extra project!, we can all make mocs- i got a lot of tanned coons but not outside leather. Want to see if my uncle,(Dr. Mic Scholls) can figure out how to fit my bunions!!  rdfce

Bulldog Lady , how about a bunion strecher ?  Back when both mena and womens shoes were real leather I used to help my mother strech the tight spots ? [hmm]

Micanopy

You can make a rounded wooden dowel to stretch out the bunion areas, slightly dampen the leather first, then use the dowel to push and shape those areas. Even harder than that is when someone has terrible high arches and wants to wear knee high moc's. Keeping the arch supports in place is one trick pony but it can be done.
