ok...so after  many hours grinding my wheels and many miles and sore feet...or was that a sore brain?  i know what i am doing.   instead of buying a new rifle i am going to customize the one i have  and actually get what i am looking for...what can i say  i am picky  lol.    so i found a place that will make a full length stock for me ..inlet it,  and make in grade 2-3 curly maple for around 200$ or so   and i even found a drop in replacement barrel from green mountain.. and even better...its a 38" barrel...!   however im concerened about caliber...its a 40 cal...and i want to hunt whitetail with it ...is that sufficient  enuf for that task? i am used to seeing 45 cal  and up...but alas they have no offerings in anything but 40 cal....anyadvice?

Check your local laws - some places you need 45 or more to hunt deer...

Like Jim said check with your state to see what they say about useing
a 40 cal for white tail. IF that say 40 is ok then go for it .

As far cal of the gun goes when hunting any deer, elk, buffalo, or even
elephant it is shot placement, if you can not put it in the kil zone, even
a two in. ball is not going to make a clean kill.

It all comes down to shooter and his/her ability to place the round where
it needs to be placed.

A 40 cal will thump them good, I'm in the process of looking for one. Here in Ark. A 40 cal is the minimum for deer and the max for small game, best of both world's for me here.

My advice is don't buy the GM 38" x .40cal barrel...it is extremely heavy in that length with that small of a bore.
I have the GM 33" x .40cal barrel and like it but it's a load...couldn't stand for it to be any longer/heavier and I'm a big boy at 6'4" x 225lbs.
I've seen a couple posts on forums over the past couple years about getting that 38" x .40cal and were sorry they did as they said it was just way too heavy out front and they put them back up for sale...your decision of course.

In addition, generally speaking, the .40cal is not considered a "deer caliber"...a .50/.54cal would give you much better flexibility for big game hunting.

Taking for granted that you could use more powder than you could burn in that GM and not blow it up, how fast can a 40 ball go out of a 38" barrel? Sounds like it would be a real photon torpedo like those 43"+ long 50 cals (chunk guns).

makes me wonder ?  the underhammer .50 that i gave my dad, is a 1:72 twist,   with a 42'' barrel on her,

should really pick some speed up, in that long of a barrel.

38" 40cal might be nice...my 42" GM 40 is a little heavy toward the front.
