Does anyone have a pattern for circa 1825 plains indians moccasins?

How much material do yo leave behind the heel outline ?

Micanopy

You can leave the tip alone or cut it and sew the heel shut, depends, its kinda a clan thing to leave it pointed but if you wanta trim it you can. Just wip stitch the cut and make sure you put a couple threads in the heel seam to lock it so it wont unravel.

They are easy to make !  Bulldog lady made mine and added a little room for my Dr Schoells so I wouldn't hurt my tender little feet....  ROFL

What I was gettin at was it looked like ya left an1-1/2" or so behind the heel outline . Do you just trim it up so it meets in center of heel or overlap it ? This as to fit your foot ? How do you know how much to leave behind heel ?

Micanopy

put the moc on yer foot and pull it up as high as it will go. then take a pencil, easier with a partner, and scribe a line across the back of the heelwhile flatening the tip. now you can take off the moc flaten the heel tip and cut it so that there is a kinda straight line across the back of the heel where the tip was. If yer feelin real brave you can trim it so that it is rounded at the ends. Then sew that cut shut and yer done. I dont trim mine, thats my signature and I dont trim any of the clans. If I dont see that when I am looking at a track on our land I know that some one that aint supposed to be there has been there.

Don't remember where read it and don't know it for a fact-some tribes left heel flap and fringed it to help cover track-  Uncle's pattern is the best and easiest of the  many I read and tried. He is a truely a man of much wisdom, and he shares it with all  thanks again  Di

Thats true, in fact there are some clans that added different types of fringing even around the seam of the moccasin to make a distinct track. I am glad you found the information useful. There are a lot of different ways to make moccasins, some are easy, some are not. These are simple and use less leather than some others, and they dont take much time to make.

All I can say is "they are so easy to make I can do it!"   They are also very comfortable and look great (after Di added the quill work to them)
