I can't recall if it was hear but I read somewheres about folk using 3/8" hardwood dowell for a range rod for their .50.

How think y'all about that?
Does it flatten the ball or bullet point?
Do you attach pullers..... how?

I want something other than my rifles ramrod.

Any advice or opinions are appreciated.

Sincerely,
Tommy

I made my range rod 5/16 steel rod drilled and taped 10/32 treads on on end and use a oldfashon door knob for a handle as soon as i find a billiard ball i will make the handle out of that. I use a brass 5/16 flair fitting for a bore protector.  The weight of the rod makes it easey to use at the range.

Always try to use a muzzle protector .... like Mike said.

I don't use regularly, but do keep handy a 48" brass rod I call "the judge". I simply cupped one end with a 1/2" round rotary file, then drilled and tapped for 10-32 accessories. When a ball gets stubborn about going down or coming out, I fetch the Judge and set matters right.

In a .50, if I were using a wooden dowel as a range rod, I'd go with a 7/16" diameter with a brass tip securely pinned into place. The heavier wood is less likely to break and easier to get a good hold on if you don't install some sort of handle right away. Watch the grain on store-bought dowels -- you have to drive the store people nuts by searching through the bin for however many sticks you want with straight grain, to avoid the things shearing and becoming spears aimed at the side of your hand.

Had a gunsmith tell me years ago    no need for them unbreakable rods for muzzle loaders ... one day I walked into his shop and he was carryun em ... asked him why?   Seems he had to listen toa huntin buddy scream n cry 60 miles on the trip to the Emergency room with a wood rod plum center thru his hand.
I would rather lurn some thing the easy way.

Ive made wood ones and fiber glass/unbreakable ones. buy an end, epoxy it on,for 10x32 or 8x32 depending. I use old metal door knobs or billiard balls for mine.  They have endured the test of some really stuck balls in friends guns.
the billiard balls make it real easy to seat balls.
I make them up forpistol rods as well.
not traditional looking, but work better than anything Ive used yet!

as i find a billiard ball i will make the handle out of that.

Mike I have an 8 ball in pretty good condition.  Interested?
