We need to get something going here.  We're all here because of our fondness for BP and muzzleloaders, right?  It would be very interesting knowing if flintlocks or percussions are each member's favorite (what's that, maybe 3 who post?) and what what portion of cap vs flint each of us have.  We can also talk about WHY, a particular favorite along with its caliber/load and anything else you can think to mention.

well ! have danged few photo`s , but have three long guns of the soot belching class , one is an older Tennessee mountain rifle in .40 caliber , it`s a flinchlock as some call them , the other two are percussion , one an old ( early 1960`s ) .50 caliber smoothbore , and the other an ardessa .50 caliber hawken , and two pistols , a .45 caliber kentucky with no markings at all in flint , the lock looks like a cva lock , but I`ve built a few of those , and this looks more like the originals we see , and finally the colt revolver that never existed , the .44 caliber 1851 , only marking is a very faded out YORK on the barrel flat on the left side of the barrel . I`ve owned dozens over the past 40 years , but these are whats left ! and I do not have a photo of the spanish .50 cal smoothbore !  but I can tell you it sold for $19.98 new ! lol

I have three percussion rifles, and only one flintlock (my latest acquisition).  I am thinking the flintlock will become my favorite.  Like me, it's kinda particular about how it is handled and has to be treated in a certain way to be very cooperative.

So far so good.  I'll chime in with mine.  From what I see and hear it seems percussion heads the list of interest.  Most started out with percussion, as did I, but not long after that I bought a flintlock.  For a long time I've used flintlocks for 98% of my shooting/hunting.  Currently I own three caplocks but only two are "active", the third being retired - after it is 55 years old.  The two that are active are a Mike Lange .45 X 25" X 15/16" halfstock; this has been, so far, used as a target rifle.  The other one is a US M1841 special ordered in .54 like the originals.  Man, but it's a beauty!

As for flintlocks there are 6 long guns and one flint pistol.  There you have it.

I have quite a few black powder guns but only two flinters, a .45 long rifle and a .50 pistol. I have 7 percussion rifles, 2 percussion 12ga. shotguns, 2 percussion pistols, 6 revolvers, and 2 that qualify for muzzleloader hunting here but use 209 primers. I haven't shot either of the unmentionables in a couple of years.

Do we have to pick a favorite? pnic

I shoot both and enjoy the difference. I'm usually a little more accurate with percussion but have used both for target, hunting, and plinking and do well with them.

I started out with caplock and still have a few that I haven't yet shot but the same thing is true for my flintlocks and smoothbores.

Outside of my two Mongrel cappers, the rest are flinters. Why? I was an abused child (You try having Hanshi for an older brother) and I thrive on being frustrated. That, and flinters are just more fun.
I am the one your mom warned you about!
