Can someone tell me how to do this?

tom-h

yep ;D ok --ok-- i tell  in  this post  take a pair of pliers  carefully  hold the screw so as to not  damage the thread's hold the screw head in the flame of a propane torch till red then dip the head in motor oil and let cool if it ain't the dark color you want  wipe it off good and do it again  but be sure to use oil that has a very high flash point i use plane ol'cheap re-cycled oil for this and it works well.

Most screws will turn blue before they heat all the way to red. Watch your colors. Practice on a couple you won't be using and learn to pull them out of the flame just a sec before they get where you want them.

If you're using modern screws (the hardware store variety as opposed to ones ordered special through our ML supply houses) most of them are zinc-plated. A fairly stiff brush on the grinder will usually buff the plating off, otherwise you can burn it off -- but if you burn it off there's a lower success ratio so far as getting the metal to blue. Tends to overheat and go past the blue stage before you realize it.

In that case, use a q-tip to dab on bluing solution and odds are no one will ever know the difference.

A good polish before heating will result in a more even blue color Jerry.
Watch them cheap screws ... like Mongrel said they are plated or dipped in Zinc.
Not good to breath if ya burn it off ... upsett ya tummy.
lol

Muratic acid should remove the plating . Do it outdoors and dont breath the fumes. Muratic can be got at most places that sell house paint and such.
