What is TOW

Ive seen the letters TOW before  such as a TOW worm for cleaning the barrel but What exactly is it ???

 ;D  This is what i know so take it as its worth......  Tow is  the fibers of the Flax Plant it was used as a mop for cleaning out the barrel of a muzzleloader.I havent used it myself but i do know you can get it from Dixie Gun Works. From what i read you wound it into a worm And wet it with water and used it to scrub the bore. I could also be used as tinder for a fire too.

It is any natural fiber used for cleaning,  I had some hemp rope pieces that I unravelled and an old timer said that it was then TOW and I should use it to scrub out my guns.... Works great!
