Birds with a Hawken?

I went pheasant hunting this week with a couple of my snobby Benelli shooting friends and just happened to bring along my almost Hawken to show it off. They said it looked cool but that I cannot shoot birds with it. After a three hour dog walk in the wind with no birds to show for it, we went to the sporting clays to fire off a few rounds. That Hawken did not shoot any live birds but it did anihilated a clay pigeon. The day before I had made up some wads using two patches folded and pressed with wax, and with a piece of 1/2" copper pipe, a part of a paper towel, an ounce of #8, and some more wax, made some "shotgun" bullets. Poured some of my homemade powder down the barrel, rammed the wad down and very gently shove the shot down and rammed it faily snug, capped the nipple and boom! Another clay pigeon bites the dust. Or becomes dust depending on how you look at it. Not the best use of a rifle I know, but since the barrel is almost smooth bore I wasn't really worried about it and it was worth it just to see the looks on their faces when I fired it. Wish one of us was smart enough to bring a camera out, but we weren't. I did take a couple of pics of the loads though.
I am the one your mom warned you about!
