In my post of sighting in I said my rod went south on me. I went to the hardware store bought a 5/16 3foot brass rod I took it to a machinist friend of mine . He chucked it in his lathe an drilled and tapped the end for 10/32.I did not trust my hand drill to be steady and straight .I found out a 3/8 tapered jam nut from the plumbing department. Used for copper tubing made a perfect bore guide. Slipped it on . I then cut it to length threaded the top end . Got me a peace of mesquite drilled and threaded it . Screwed it on with some acrillic glue. shaping the handle to fit . Then shined the rod with fitz brass polish. I am good to go sling some lead this weekend. I am going to figure out a way to attach it to my mesquite shooting sticks I am in the process of making.Wonder why Mesquite. I own 36 acres of it.

When my family moved from Texas to Kansas camp food didn't taste at all right. Mostly a little flat. Then someone started selling mesquite wood for grills. Well the light finally came on in my head. As a kid we were always told to cut down or cut up mesquite for camp wood. Remember that Dad has a screw bean mesquite gun stock that was very attractive. I may borrow your idea for a range rod though up here Osage Orange is probably what I'll use for a handle.

You are certainly rich in mesquite.  Good doings.
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.
