Anyone seen any good plans for making your own gas forge. Coal is hard to get and the forges are pretty exspensive. Heading to bakersfield next week and a fella on craigslist down there has a speedy-forge industrial for 200.00 Might have to go look at it. Says the blower motor don't work. I'm having trouble finding parts for it, might see if it's worth buying.

you could probably get a new blower from a place like Grainger Industrial or even just use a hair dryer! But those little gas forges aren't really big enough to make anything bigger than a knife

Wolf is right about the work size limits, however my gas forge has an interior of 6"x15" cylinder and with the added use of my O/A torch I have been able to make  a lot of items other than knives.
I built mine using a "modified sidearm burner" that does not require a blower and when properly tuned will operate at 2psig pressure. You will need one burner for 350 cu" forge interior. If you have a larger interior, add a second burner. You will need 2" of inswool for insulation with about 1/4"of refractory coating to protect the wool.
Here are some places to start looking.

The last one is overkill with two burners, but it shows the steps in building.
If I can be of any help, just holler.

Thanks guys, those sites are a pretty good source of info.

Well the speedy forge was junk. Could not even recycle any of it. Too bad, looks like it was a hard worker at one time. I hate it when people don't take care of equipment.

What about building your own?  I have been looking at some scrape plate I  have around here and think I know where I can get some firebrick and some of the fire cotton (I think that what they call it). and I have the plans for a mini mongo burner.  I figure I can make a forge that can have a six inch opening without losing any heat and using two or more burners should be able to heat just about anything I will ever attempt.  I do not plan on making molten metal (at least not on purpose!)

Yeah just started looking seriously, need to start putting the pieces together little by little. There are a few good sites for parts as well as plans.

hi, I built a gas forge. Ordered my orifices and fans from Centaur Forge co. they are online too, great old outfit, the old man and his wife both died in the past few years and their daughter finally took over. Done business with them for years. You can buy a gas forge from them if you wish they are fine equip.  I also have a coal forge i use at times, I really like the coal, but I really like the gas forge too so? best wishes, ray
