I'm in the middle of tryin to scribe the compass, it's coming along but I think I have a problem doing circles.

To many folks try to jump in the middle and do engraving over their heads.  That said!  Start out by scratching straight line bordering and more geometric styles to get use to your tool and don't start doing alot of swirls and circles until you feel real comfortable trying them!  Engraving, not scrimshaw on horn, takes a lot of practice and patience!

Use furniture tacks and snip the heads off.  Just tried to make a flat horn the other day. It's really screded up.

Crazy Crow sells brass tacks and pins, but why don't you use wood pegs?  They're more correct, if your going that route and tooth picks make dandy horn base pegs!  Just drill a small hole the size of the pick.  Put a spot of glue on it and insert into the hole.  When dry, just cut off with a sharp knife!

Some unknowing folks and modern companies use brass nails, but these were uncommon in the old days.  Usually wood or iron nails were used.  The larger solid brass headed tacks came along later and most of the original buffalo horns we see in museums and photo's are from the late 19th century (1870's to 1900).
