Have you ever wondered how they make those fancy symbols like ° and ¢.  You do that using your "Alternate" (Alt) key.  By holding down the Alt key while typing in the numbers on your numeric keyboard you can create all kinds of fancy little symbols.  Heck, people will think you are a computer whiz when you use these symbols. ;D  

Here's some of the keys to type in.  There are others and there are duplicates for the same symbols.

How To Use Alt Code Characters


  • Make sure that you switch on the Number Lock on your keyboard.
  • Hold down the ALT key.
  • Using the numeric section of your keyboard, while holding down the Alt key, type the number of the alt code you want to get.

Example 1

For example the decimal alt code of heart is 3
Press and hold the ALT key and type 3 then you will get ?

Example 2

For example the decimal alt code of one half is 171
Press and hold the ALT key and type 171 then you will get ½
