Have a new to me smooth bore with both cap and flint locks. I've removed the cap lock and nipple from the drum. Next, how to remove the drum? Does it just unscrew, need a special tool? It's a drum too, not a snail.

Papa

William, they do unscrew. If there is no flat for a wrench, screw a 1/4 x 28 bolt or rod into the nipple hole and use it to turn the drum out.

William in case you have not already figured it out you will need to install a flash hole liner. I do not know if the threads will be the same or not. Maybe some one that has been threw this will jump in and tell us some thing, one way or the other

Removed the drum and which revealed a rather large channel into the breech. I know that the vent liners aren't that large so there must be something else that I will need to get in order to get this working as a flint lock. The lock itself looks identical  to the capper that was in there, both are L&R but the flint has slightly different dimensions and I will need to do some in letting in order to get it to fit.
The curly maple used for the stock is real nice but that is the only outstanding aspect of this smooth bore. Live and learn

Mongrel taught me how to make a vent liner from a hardened bolt so when I am messing with some abused firearms it doesn't matter the size of the hole. I can just tap it out to the next size thread and make it work just fine. One heck of a lot CHEAPER too!
I am the one your mom warned you about!

I remember that process being described, thanks for reminding me.

Don't change the inletting, file the flint lock plate to fit the existing opening, otherwise the caplock can slop around!  L&R specifies that in the instructions for their RPL locks.  Like a dummy I didn't on my T-C when I changed to an L&R lock, but changed the inletting.  Then the lock sat too far forward and I had to file it anyway.  Then I had to fill in the opening which resulted from moving the lock back with colored Acraglass and it isn't very pretty!

Sage advice and what I will do in this case.  Time to break out my files.

When you get the file out don't forget to look at how the lock will fit compared to the vent (or the center of the hole if you don't have the vent yet) and file for best fit to it.
Good luck with it!
