Anyone got any ideas how much it would cost to bore out the rifling in a barrel?  I would like to have a Muzzleloader that I can hunt large and small game with. was contemplating about trying to shoot shot out of my Lyman 50 cal. but most info I've found was that it's not a good idea. The funny thing about that is that I was on the Possibles shop website, and they said that you could shoot shot out of your rifled barrel. Thanks

Bob Hoyt in Pa. will do it and he isn't very expensive.
Someone here will give his contact info, I'm sure. However, he is very popular and it could be a month or more before he could get to it.

I've changed my mind. I read somewhere that if you smooth out a 50 cal. it becomes a 28 gauge. there's a gun show up my ways in a couple of months. will peruse the inventory and see if I can get lucky. in the mean time will continue to use the rifle. Thanks anyway.

While I do not clame to an experton this subject I have found that if you shoot shot thought a rifled barrle you will have hole in your pattern. While you are at the gun show you might want to see if some one has 20 ga smooth bore for sale.

The 20 ga. is normally or at least nominally a .62 caliber. My next muzzleloader will hopefully be a .62 smooth rifle. Saving for it right now, albeit a little slowly.

The twist of the rifling is what will spin the shot and create a hole in the pattern.  If your Lyman has the 1:66 twist it may not affect the pattern much at all.  Even 1:48 may be okay if you load it lightly.  Only way to find out is to get some shot and try it.  Otherwise, here is Bobby Hoyt's contact info.  I just got my .50 T-C back from him, which is now a .542 and shoots a whole lot better than what it was before.

Can you give us a ballpark number of what the cost was to bore out to .542?

Winter Hawk

$65 to freshen the barrel, $150 to rebore it.  Return shipping is on top of that.  I believe my total was around $162.  I had sent him the barrel with $75 to freshen it and return postage.  It had left hand twist so he couldn't freshen it and he bored it out instead, per my instructions.  Then he shipped it back to me trusting that I would send him the extra $75 + shipping.  And the rifle loads and shoots like a dream!
