I do make a lot of my own accouterments.
I just finished turning this striker out of Iron Wood that's been laying around the shop for 15 years.  This wood is so hard it handling of glass pot calls is  sweat music. I was amazed the difference between the rosewood , hickory, purple heart, maple and a piece of monkey wood I used to to make striker.  Varying the diameter of the striker and the tops.
Plus the hardness took some work and sharp gouges. Sanded with 100- 220 and then 320.

2 Pot calls made from Brazilian RoseWood. Which is against the law to import any longer. I'm glad I have a nice stach of this.
Glass call I left the edge with a nice ban saw pattern. This wood will darken over time and will polish out just because of the all the oils in the wood. The Slate call I oiled with 2 hand rubbed coats of 100% Tung oil.
These have a nice sound to them. Not to load but great pitches.

Nice turnings Dave, have you tried any carbide tools? amazing results on real hard wood along with other hard items such as antler!

DaveHawk

No I have not.  I only been working with Hard woods mainly. Then using wood hardner to really take away any softness in the wood to prevent rot.

As much as I hate to show my ignorance, well, I don't really hate it that much, are these turkey calls? I am only guessing turkeys from your avatar. Otherwise I have absolutely no idea what these are. I so know that they are well made, but that's about all I can tell.
I am the one your mom warned you about!

Pot  calls  for turkey hunting. One slate and one glass top.  I am surprised it only took me about a half dozen to get a good one and know what I am doing.   I took one I made to a friend yesterday in Va who has been hunting turkeys forever and he said one of the best he's heard.

DaveHawk

Finished this one up yesterday , I like the way it holds and the sound. Very light weight , The wood has been treated for hardness, Maple. Slate over glass.

Sorry I have not been around much. Very Busy season at work and family. Been getting this line of calls going.
Morning Sun Turkey calls
I did find a 1700's scratch call I am picking up the plans to make tomorrow from a friend who is letting continue the legacy of the call.
Thought I'd share what I've been making.
I'm sure you will impressed with the sounds created also.  I've been tuning strikers to be played with each call. I'm finding that each hard wood plays a scuttle difference in tonal value which tells me that one call can create many different hens , all depends on dexterity with holding a couple strikers or more.

Finished up a load of calls. Maple burl, spalted, birdseye and curly. These will be finished with slate over crystal or crystal over copper. A few Burzilian Rosewoods in the mix with a few mixed Rosewood and Maple
