I was going over my 50 cal rifle and noticed a crack in the stockIt is about an 1/2 inch long on bothsides of the stock. It cracked vertically by the firing end of the barrel.BY the screw Hawken style rifle.

You're description of the location and the cracks leave more than a little to the imagination. If you can post, or get posted, a picture of what has happened it will help us to help you.

Going just on the description I might be inclined to fill with wood putty , sand smooth like buttah , and re finish with more of whatever you used the 1st time . Be diligent in your sanding and match your filler to your original color .  This is assuming that the cause of the crack is no longer an issue ( still in a position to cause or enlarge the crack ) .

If it's at the nose end under the barrel, the best way to handle it is to bed the barrel and tang with Accra Glass. If you plan on refinishing the stock, flow some superglue in the crack after warming the superglue to facilitate the flow and then bed the barrel etc. Make sure you use an adequate separating medium between barrel and stock or the barrel will be permanently fused to the stock. Johnson's Paste Wax works pretty good.
