The first one is a smaller patch knife made from a old table knife with pewter inlay work in the wood handle. The second one was made from a old forged butcher knife blade. I turned the handle and added the steel ball to aide in seating balls and is also used to knapping my flint when needed.

If that's a steel ball on that second handle, Woody, I would be uneasy about knapping flints with it. The odds of it throwing a spark probably aren't all that great, but just once at the wrong time could be embarressing at the least, and potentially far, far worse. Knapping is best and most safely done with a non-sparking metal.

It is a old end cap off a door hinge pin and works quite well for starting a ball deep enough to cut the patch material. and in a pinch could be used for knapping, but the main use is for starting a ball.

Woody,
Mike is right about a steel ball. I have used hinge pins for the same purpose as you show, but they have been made of brass. There's at least a half dozen of them put safely away for later use, I just can't remember where they are put safely away!

Well noted guys....won't be knapping with it.  thmbsup I actually have this one that I made and knapped with...(brass nob), but I wanted to utilize this blade and ball because I really like this system.
