ok how the best way to home tan a snake skin without a kit. braintan alum, alcohol/glycerin. i want a durable leather and not brittle and stiff.

dnick

I don't have an answer for you but I have a rattlesnake skin in the freezer so I also need to find out how to tan it. Duane

kybackwoodsman

so far ive found to use a mixture of alcohol and glycerin 70-40%. or a glycol based antifreeze. clear is the best so it dont stain the skin.

dnick

What is the procedure do you soak it? if so for how long or do you brush it on?

kybackwoodsman

i think u soak it. i googled it lol

Otter

I know I've seen snake skins that were real soft tanned but this one I just rubbed salt into it and wrapped it around a strip of thin leather for my hatband and it's lasted over 40 yrs.(since the early 70s)  without a problem.

Talking about this topic with a friend of mine and he reminded me that I tanned one 30 yrs ago. Skinned it and soaked it in a brine solution for a day or so, took it out, scraped it, then nailed it to a board and let it dry out. Used it for a hat band. Hmm I wonder what happend to that hat. Probably gone the same place my memory went to.
