What is the normal and max loads in a 1858 Pietta 44 cal steel frame

The Bates and Cumpston book, 'Percussion Pistols and revolvers' show a normal load of 22-28 gr,and a max of 35gr with the .451 ball.  Jim Taylor wrote about the 58 and did some wild things with it, duplex loads (Not recommended).  He recorded 1036fps with a .456 ball and 38gr of FFg and 1087fps with a .465 ball and a full load of Pyrodex P.

'Percussion Pistols and revolvers' by Bates and Cumpston is a great book for the cap and ball shooter.  It can be had off Amazon dirt cheap.  I bought it because it covers the LeMat, it also covers the open top Colts and the 58 Remington, plus caplocks.

Using Remington Model 1858 NMA 's from Armi San Paolo, Uberti, Pietta and E.N. Santa Barbara's 25 - 30gr of Goex fffg,.457" R.B., w/ lube pill produce the tightest groups...anomalies of 25gr being the most accurate groupings at 20 paces. With E.N. Santa Barbaras.
Max loads of 40gr with BP fffg were obtained...
28gr of Goex BP fffg with a .457" roundball grouped 5 holes touchin' and a 2" flyer, with a Euroarms.

Hope that helps...
