i live in central Florida so i really don't have to worry about freezing. my question is can i use straight olive oil for patch lube or do i need to mix it with parafin if so to what ratio? i know that if i use straight oil that it can't be dripping wet i have to squeeze off the excess. so I'll take my bashing if i have to. i shoot caplock if that helps any

 dntn It'll work just fine there Capn.Just let it soak up the oil and wring it out.Ive used it with good results.In fact oldtimers used it....called it sweet oil.If your concerned about it leeching into the powder you could ram a small piece of hornet nest on top of the powder before seating the patched ball.

Here in Oklahoma I don't mix my olive oil with anything during the few times I do use a lubed patch... I usually do the spit patch and I have gotten a max of 22 shots without having to swab the barrel on "Patience"  my swab consists of running one dry patch trhough her then piming her and touching that off to insure the vent is clear, then load with poder olive oil patch and ball (patch is just damp with oil), after two rounds I go back to spit and am good for about another t10 to 15 rounds before I repeat the process...

This worked well the one day I ran 75 round through her in about a three hour period.  Ther days have been 20-30 rounds and one day of 75 rounds...

The key is you patch should be oily to the touch but not dripping wet.

It will work just fine using nothing but olive oil.  I like my lube to have more consistency so I mix sweet oil with beeswax, that way I can roll it into the lube rings of any conical I'm using.

I use olive oil and bee's wax mix,80% bee's wax 20% olive oil,or there about's. Maybe 70/30,but close.

I added a little bit of lard to this formula 70/10/20% to keep it a little softer in this climate and I have had it out in 90 degree sun and not had it liquefy like Borebutter

The olive oil sounds like a good Idea to me you could use it to lube the patches and might even fry up some greens
or whatever with it. [hmm]
So do you carry it in a Oil Horn (If there is such a thing?) or leather covered bottle or what?!
Just wondering [hmm]

You could use a gun oil bottle like one of these;

Or you can add some beeswax to it and carry it in an empty cap tin.

Oil Horn - I like that!  I cheat and use a old squeeze bottle way doown in my shooting box and only carry patches with me when in my personna...  strpot  I suppose you would have gotten it in a gallon can back in the day and had it with the rest of your supplies.

From my understanding olive oil was imported early on n been used for centuries. All kinds of uses... patch lube, gun oil, cookin, even on wind chapped skin. I carry mine in an old thick glass bottle that ill eventually cover in rawhide. Makes a cheap substitute for bear oil n the old sperm whale oil.

I use bear oil and bees wax, rendered down during bear season here in Maine. The bee's wax stiffens it up, you could use just bear oil. In the colonial period thats what everyone used. Its great stuff and the bear are just walkin around in the woods waitin for you to come and get it.
